Cozy Season: October on the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail
October is when the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail trades its long summer light for something warmer and quieter. The hillsides turn gold and crimson, the tasting rooms lean cozy and candlelit, and a bold glass of red suddenly feels exactly right. Harvest is wrapping, the crowds thin out, and the whole trail settles into its most atmospheric season, and it's going out in style. Here's how to spend it.
Spooky & Boozy
Kick off the month with the trail's most delightfully odd event. On Thursday, October 1, Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars hosts Spooky Boozy Bonsai in The Wine Chalet (6:30–7:30 PM, $67 + tax). Plant your own miniature graveyard bonsai, complete with tiny tombstones and a black cat, with a glass of Red Cat in hand. Equal parts eerie and elegant, and exactly the kind of hands-on evening October was made for. Spots are limited, so reserve ahead.
Celebrate the Harvest
There's no better place to mark the season! On Saturday, October 3, the Heron Hill Canandaigua Lake Tasting Room hosts its Harvest Festival, and keeps live music going on the deck through mid-month, the last golden-hour sets before the patio closes for the year.
Raise a Stein
The following weekend, Saturday, October 17, Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars throws its Oktoberfest & Fall Market in Naples. Enjoy handmade crafts from local makers, seasonal pours, and all the crisp-afternoon energy autumn offers. Lederhosen optional; good company required.
A Sweet & Spooky Finish
Down on Main Street, Acquilano Wine Cellars closes the month on theme. Winemakers Night (Thursday, October 15) offers one last chance to talk craft as the crush wraps, National Chocolate Day (Wednesday, October 28) pairs the cellar's wines with chocolate, and Halloween at the winery (Saturday, October 31) sends October off in costume.
Plan a Color Tour
The trail's thirty miles have never looked better than in mid-October. Map a foliage loop from Naples up to Canandaigua, string together a few of the nine wineries — Inspire Moore, Arbor Hill, Hometown Wine Company, Randall-Standish, Hotel Canandaigua, and Song Hill among them — and let the drive be half the fun. Designate a driver or book a tour, check hours before you go (fall schedules shift), and give yourself the whole unhurried afternoon.
Cozy season is short. Come spend it on the lake.
